Having a wall mural on the inside of your home can not only make your indoor living environment unique, it can make it your own. That is why choosing a mural artist is such an important part of making sure that this project goes smoothly.

Here are 7 different things that you should know when choosing a mural artist:

  • Check for References
  • Look at Some Examples
  • Understand Their Specialties
  • Discuss Specifics of Your Mural
  • Don’t Expect Too Much
  • Get an Estimate on the Price
  • Understand How They Charge

1. Check for References:
Just as you would not hire an employee without checking for references, you should make sure that your mural artist also comes with professional experience. Make a personal contact. This is your best way of finding out exactly what you can expect from the artist.

2. Look at Some Examples:
Often, a mural artist will have examples of their work with them but it would also be a good idea if you could look at some of their samples in the real world.

3. Understand Their Specialties:
Every artist is going to have a specialty and something that they are particularly well-suited to do. It would be best if the specialty of the artist is matched what you were looking for in your wall mural.
4. Discuss Specifics of Your Mural:
Nobody is going to have the same idea as to what they want in a wall mural. For some of us, it is a matter of bringing the outdoors into our indoor living environment. For others, they might enjoy having something a little more abstract.

Take enough time discussing these things with your potential artists so that they understand exactly what you’re looking for.

5. Don’t Expect Too Much:
Many of us have unusual expectations whenever it comes to having something like this completed. In a perfect world, the artist would be able to come in and do their work uninterrupted.

An average size wall mural can take anywhere from a couple weeks to a month or perhaps longer, depending on what you need.

Ask your mural artist for an estimate of how long it will take them to complete and then add about half of that time in addition onto the estimate. More than likely, they will complete the project on time but if you add time for yourself, you avoid the frustrations of having an incomplete project.

6. Get an Estimate on the Price:
Once you have outlined what you would like to your wall mural artist, they should be able to give you an estimate on the price. Typically, this estimate will be a firm figure but there may be times whenever the artist might put a clause or two into the estimate as well. This is something that you will have to discuss with them on a case-by-case basis.

7. Understand How They Charge:
Most mural artists are going to stick with the estimate that they give you but you should also understand what would happen if they should run over on their time.
